Football is in the air

I say this every year, but I really do love football! It can make grown men cry and upstanding women curse like sailors. The game evokes passion in people unlike any other sport especially in the South. We love our teams more than we love our sweet tea. And, just for the record, I am not talking about college teams. (That’s for another time and magazine…)
High School football is more than a sport, it’s an event that rallies a community like no other. Just look at how the communities of Lineville and Ashland came together to support Central High School of Clay County last year in its inaugural first season. I watched several games over there and needless to say, it was electrifying as were games at Wadley, Woodland, Handley and Randolph County. That’s what football does. It excites people.
But Friday Night Life isn’t just about the action that takes place between goal posts. The Life is all encompassing. It is the smell of popcorn, sight of pompoms waving proudly, the sound of the drum line warming up, and the yell of the crowd when the local football hero makes the game winning catch.
We talk about Friday night all week in the grocery stores, classrooms and restaurants around the area. We know the players because most of us have watched them grow up or went to school with a relative of theirs.
When I was in high school, I didn’t appreciate the Friday Night excitement as much as I do now. I went to the games but it was more about being seen than being a part of something bigger than me. Now I appreciate the finer points of the Friday Nights in the fall. I challenge each teenager that is a part of it no matter how big or small to cherish the time… You are making memories that you will tell stories about for the rest of your life. And 20 years from now, when you look back at this season, I hope the chills still come for you as they do for me when I tell of some of our football teams from back in the day!

Enjoy Friday Night Life!
