It would be the Navy Blue versus the Royal Blue in a clash just beyond the tides of Mobile Bay. The Academy’s football stadium was a beautiful backdrop for high school football: a soft black track surrounding a perfectly kept field of grass; stands just big enough to hold both crowds; an overall idyllic setting that had been carved into a hillside, with Spanish Moss hovering over the edges, and a cool breeze from the waters nearby.

As the Admirals took to the field, with their size and athleticism resembling that of Handley, the Clay County fans knew immediately that the hours spent in the car would result in a fierce battle. They also knew however, that this is the last year of Clay County High School Football, and the Panthers would not bow to anyone.

The Admirals would begin the game on the receiving end of the kick-off, bringing the ball back to the 35-yard line. Quarterback Hunter Slater would drop back in the shotgun on the first play, and after scampering to avoid rushers, would dance left and run up the sideline for a 40-yard gain. The Panther defense would hold the Admirals to possible field goal range. After a delay-of-game penalty, Bayside would go for the field goal from about 30 yards out, and would be just short.

The Admirals had prepared themselves for Coach Herron’s running game, stopping any attempts the Panthers made on their first drive. But the Panthers didn’t flinch. On the first punt for the Panthers, defenders Aaron Gortney and Jared Estes would pick up and knock down receiver Greg Parker with a convincing thud. The Panther defense would come up huge again on 3rd and 9, as Rob Smith would blast through a large offensive line and nail the quarterback.

To the dismay of many of the Panther fans, Coach Herron would continue to opt for the run even though jaunts from Lamar Jones and Shawncey Simmons would be stopped behind the line. Finally, after many attempts at a similar play, and being stuffed, Simmons would give the ball to Deidric Rutledge, who would run left for a 15-yard gain. The toss left, with nearly 3:00 to play in the first quarter, would be the first real sign of productivity from the Panther offense. Good field position from the previous punt however, enabled Rutledge’s run to place the Panthers in the red zone. Motivated by his teammate’s success, Lamar Jones would also break through on the next play with a run up the gut. He would be dropped just on the edge of the 1-yard line. Jones would continue in on the next play, giving the Panthers six points, with 12 seconds to play in the 1st quarter. The PAT would make it 7-0. The series stunned the home crowd, whose student section would out-cheer the entire visiting crowd on every play.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Quarterback Hunter Slater looked to ignite his offense by handing the ball to the Admirals’ beast-of-a-running back, 6’, 210 pound Jonathon Walton. To the shock of both crowds, in a David versus Goliath scenario, Walton collided with the miniature defender Travis Smith, who knocked Walton flat on his back. The play set up the first set of real cheers from the Ashland fans who apparently needed more than just touchdowns to make their voices heard. The play would also brighten the fire of the Panther defense, which would hold the Admirals to another punt.

Like in David versus Goliath, the play against Walton seemed to put a little fear in the eyes of the Admirals. The Panthers would continue running the same run plays as they had before, and on the next drive, they started working. Lamar Jones and Deidric Rutledge would trade off a set of runs that would each earn first downs. Then, on a 2nd and 9 play, Shawncey Simmons would look to toss to Jones, but would keep the ball and run left up the sideline. Simmons would be stopped just short of the end zone. The ensuing run and kick from Simmons would make it 14-0.

The Admiral offense would turn on the heat with the kick-off return on the next play. Sophomore receiver Greg Parker would shoot through the gut of Panther special teams rushers and head towards the end zone. Kicker Lamar Jones would be forced to make the stop, tackling Parker on the 30-yard line. A series of short passes and runs from the Admirals would culminate with a touchdown run from Quarterback Hunter Slater. The PAT would make it a one-touchdown game of 14-7 with 6:11 to play in the 1st half.

The points would breathe some fire into Bayside, who would hold the Panthers to a punt on the next drive. Jamari Staples would perfectly place the kick, which would roll to the 2-yard line. The next series would be filled with controversy, leading many on the opposing bench and in the stands to shake their fists in rage. On the first play of the drive, the Panthers would sack Hunter Slater in the Admirals end zone. The referees however, would put the ball on the 1-yard line. On the next play, Slater would be dropped again, without making forward progress, and clearly in the endzone, but the referees would again place the ball at the one. Clay County fans were livid. This would be the beginning of a series of extremely questionable calls from the referees.

The Admirals would be forced to punt from the 1. The kick would put the Panthers in great field position at the halfway mark. Shawncey Simmons would mimic the Admirals first play of the game by dropping back in the shotgun on the next play. Simmons would fake a throw, hop left, slalom between three defenders, run forty yards and dive for the touchdown. The PAT would just miss the left post, making it 20-7 with just over 1:00 in the half.

The Admirals would refuse to give up before the half, pushing their offense about 30 yards. A 50-yard pass to senior receiver Geoffrey Stinebaugh would fly towards the end zone, but would be intercepted by a sprinting Shawncey Simmons, who dove in front of Stinebaugh at the last second. The home crowd sat stunned as their team left the field at the half, down by 13.

As in every game the Panthers have played this season, their opponents came out of the locker room fired up and refusing defeat. The Admirals would be no different, holding the Panthers on the first drive of the 2nd half. The Panthers punt however, would have defender Adam Farrow stopping the ball on the 1-yard line.

Running back Joseph Stassen would give the Admirals some breathing room with a 8-yard run up the middle. The Admirals would march up the field, but would be stopped by another interception from Devin Gaddis. Gaddis would return the ball a couple dozen yards, but would be brought back after a Panther block to the back.
On 3rd and 6, a long pass would be completed to DeAndre Wills. Upon turning to run however, Wills would fumble the ball and it would be recovered by Bayside. With an excited crowd, the Admirals seemed fit to make a push. The previous play however, angered the Panther defense, and they held the Admirals to another punt. On 3rd down of this drive, Shawncey Simmons would run for another touchdown, and make the PAT for a score of 27-7.

On the next Panther drive, a pass from Shawncey Simmons to the end zone would be intercepted and ran back 30 yards. On 2nd and 15, with over 11:00 to play in the game Hunter Slater would connect with Stinebaugh for a 60-yard pass play and a touchdown. The PAT would make it 27-14. Things would continue to get interesting, as the admirals would line up for the onside kick. Clay County would get caught like deer in the headlights and Stinebaugh would pounce on the ball for the Admirals. Insanity would ensue, as the admirals would make a rally in the closing minutes. On a raucous 4th and 9, to the uproar of both crowds, Bayside would be forced to go for it. A false start by the offense would send defender Jaylan Ackles off his perch, demolishing the tiny center for the Admirals. In a bizarre call by the referees, the move by Ackles would negate the false start and give the Admirals an additional 15 yards and a first down. On the next play, Jamari Staples would make a touchdown-saving interception and run the ball back nearly fifty yards. Without explanation, however, the referees would bring the ball back to the spot of the interception; Panther ball.

Shawncey Simmons would be sacked on the next play. However, the defender would grab Simmons by the facemask, forcing a 15-yard penalty on the home team. At another random moment, the Ashland fans decided to cheer louder than they had before at the play. After a 30-yard run from Simmons, the Bayside defense would hold Clay County to a punt. Bayside Academy would take an odd time-out prior to the punt. The message from Coach Lazenby, led the Admirals to block the punt and recover in the red zone. The drive would lead to a 4th and 3 run, which would be complete for the 1st down. A short pass to the end zone on the play would result in another Panther interception, this time by Travis Smith on the 3-yard line.

When it seemed the Panthers could then run the clock to end the game, the Panthers would fumble the ball near the 30-yard line. Bayside would then complete a short pass to the big man, Jonathon Walton. Walton would shrug off flying Panther defenders and break through three tackles before falling just short of the end zone. On 4th and 1, the Admirals would run it in for the touchdown, make the ensuing PAT, and make it a 6-point game with 1:32 to play.

The feeling made the visiting crowd a little uneasy considering the result of the previous onside kick.

Bayside would try a different version of the onside kick and would make a dog pile on the ball with several Clay County players. In the end, defender Travis Smith would come up with the ball. Instead of running the clock, the Panthers would bring out the full offense. On the first play, Shawncey Simmons would run straight through the middle of the defense all the way for the touchdown. A 2 pt. conversion from the Panthers would then put a dagger into the hopes of the admirals. A lob pass to Jamari Staples in the end zone would bring smiles, cheers, and sighs of relief. Panther fans could relax for the long ride home or enjoy a nice next day at the beach. Clay County will host Leeds for the 2nd time this year in for Round 3 next Friday.

Friday Night Life 2011 Issue

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="f1fa4250-43e6-d2e6-d9e8-6d7adc5f33f5" style="height: 267px; The stadium atmosphere at Saks High School was ideal for Friday-Night football, with a rich aroma of barbeque and hot dogs that drifted through the night air. With only two losses on the season, and an explosive offense, the Wildcats seemed fit to give Coach Herron and the Panthers a battle on their trip away from home.

Saks would begin the attack on a massive kick-off return that brought the Wildcats back to the 50-yard line. Quarterback Timothy Johnson would then hand the ball off to running back Justin Grier, who would push the boys in red an additional 15 yards. The Panther defense would hold however, forcing the Wildcats to punt. Kicker Joshua Wilson would beautifully place his kick very near the end zone for Saks. Clay County would produce enough offense to get their own punt formation in to a safe region. As Jamari Staples would approach the Panther’s kick, he would be struck and awarded a penalty. The Panthers would later punt again after failing to progress. The first quarter would be a battle of defenses as both teams forced a series of punts.

Lamar Jones would make the first major positive play for the Panthers with a 25-yard dash up the gut. While leaping over a fallen defender, Jones would be caught on the ankle and pulled down, preventing him from going all the way. A run left from quarterback Shawncey Simmons would bring the first points on the night. With just over 10:00 to play in the first half, the Panthers would lead the game 7-0. The Panthers would keep their motivation, giving the returning receiver a big knock and a tackle by Dan Parsons. On 2nd and 9, with 9:00 to play in the half, Clay County would pounce on a fumble, bringing their offense back on the field. The next play would have Deidric Rutledge dancing left for a quick touchdown. The PAT would make is 14-0 for the Panthers.

The Wilcats would set up a pretty series of air and ground combinations, exchanging short and long passes to Marquis Townsend and runs from Justin Grier. Eventually, Saks would reach the 8-yard line. When it seemed the Wildcats were deemed to score, a pass to the end zone for Townsend would be tipped by the Panthers and land in the arms of defender Payton Reynolds. The Wildcats would try to get it back by sacking Shawncey Simmons for a 5-yard loss, and also dropping Lamar Jones behind the line. Jamari Staples would be forced to punt from his end zone.

Narrowly escaping a sack on by DeAndre Wills on 2nd and 9, Timothy Johnson would complete a 20-yard pass to Marquis Townsend. Motivated by the missed opportunity, Wills would make a huge sack on the very next play. The Wildcats would fail to convert before the half, after being stopped by the Panthers on 4th and 1.

The Panthers would begin the second half with a quarterback draw from Simmons. Simmons would take the ball left and run the entire length of the field before being stopped just near the end line. On the next play, Deidric Rutledge would easily run in for the touchdown. Simmons would tack on the extra point, making it 21-0 for the Panthers. The Clay County band, which had arrived in the spirit of Halloween, sported outfits from superheroes, to villains, to farm animals. The band’s stand tunes pushed the blue and white through a drab 4th quarter with no additional points scored. Coach Herron’s crew showed that there must something in the water in Clay County; as the Panthers dominated yet another Calhoun County powerhouse. Clay County will blast into the playoffs on a near-perfect record of (9-1). They look to host the Tigers of Luverne (7-3) next week in Ashland.

Clay County 40 - Marbury 14

By Steve Haslam

Another chapter in Clay County Football came to an end Friday night, as the Panthers played their last regular-season home game. As the last senior class was honored for their accomplishments, a feeling of nostalgia and honor brought tears to the eyes of many in the crowd. Despite the somewhat somber feeling that came as a result of reflecting on the past, the smell of freshly boiled peanuts and the sweet sounds of the marching band, maintained the Friday-night football ambience.

The Marbury Bulldogs came into Ashland with a much better record than when they had last played the Panthers. With certain playoff implications for both teams, it was going to be a battle of strategy, speed, and endurance.

The game would begin with a massive hit from Dan Parsons as #22 Lorenza Cooper would attempt a kickoff return for the Bulldogs. Parsons would stop Marbury on their 20-yard line. The Panther defense would continue to hold firm and force a punt on the Bulldogs’ first series.

On 3rd down of the Panther’s first drive, Lamar Jones would take a hand-off left, take a knock, stay on his feet, do a spin move, break three tackles, and tip toe down the sideline for a touchdown. The PAT would be good, making it 7-0 for the Panthers with over 9:00 to play in the first quarter. One the ensuing kick-off return, Dan Parsons would repeat his efforts with a bug hit on the receiver. Clay County’s defense would come up big again, two plays later, when Andrew Robinson would sack the quarterback for a five-yard loss.

The last three minutes of the first quarter would be packed with action. Clay County would complete more pass plays than usual, including an 18-yard pass to Devin Gaddis. With 1:58 to play, and on an odd 4th and 7, the Panthers would go for a touchdown. Shawncey Simmons would make a quick toss to Lamar Jones, who would break two tackles and leap in for six. The Marbury defense would rush in and block the PAT, making it 13-0. Marbury would step up their offense with Lorenza Cooper’s return on the ensuing kick-off. Cooper would bust through the middle and make it 50 yards before he was tripped up. On the Bulldog’s next play, Cooper would connect with Theodis Perdue for a 30-yard pass. The Panther defense would then stand still as Perdue turned and jogged into the end zone. After a penalty, Henri Perez would complete a long PAT, making it 13-7. The Panthers opted not to let the clock run out without a couple more plays. On 1st and 10, Shawncey Simmons would run the ball on a draw 65 yards for the touchdown. Continuing their uncharacteristic playing style, the Panthers would then complete a 2-point conversion to make it 21-7 to end the 1st quarter.

After holding the Bulldogs at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, Shawncey Simmons would connect with Jamari Staples, who would make a diving catch in the end zone. The PAT would be no good, making it 27-7.

On the Bulldogs’ next drive, they would take to the air again, completing a 30-yard pass to Authur Walton. Walton would jump over defender Shawncey Simmons to make a great catch. The Bulldogs would then receive three consecutive penalties, pushing them back 20 yards. A pass from Connor Brown to Jeffrey Martin on 3rd down, would get the Bulldogs their yards back and a first down. The Panthers would then struggle on two plays in a row, as substitutes couldn’t make it off the field. The errors would put the Bulldogs on the 5-yard line. The Bulldogs would end up running the ball on 4th and inches for the touchdown. The PAT would be good, making it 28-14 at the end of the 2nd half.

The 2nd half would begin with Anthony Wood running the kickoff return 85 yards for the touchdown. Jake Phillips would fumble the snap for the field goal and the Bulldogs would stop the PAT, making the score 34-14. On 3rd and 12 for Marbury, Adam Farrow would make an interception, knocking the confidence out of the Bullodgs. The Panthers would begin the 4th quarter with a pass to Trey Denney in the end zone. The Panthers would miss yet another PAT, making it 40-14. Devin Gaddis would make a game-ending interception near the end of the 4th, and the clock would run out with 40-14 being the final score. With the win, the Panthers clinched a playoff berth for 2011. As the Panthers (7-1) travel to Coosa County (0-8) next Friday, the game being played in Handley will be on their radar. The result of the game between Leeds and Handley next week may help to determine home field advantage.

Randolph County 28 Lineville 21

By Wesley Wortham

Voice of The Randolph County Tigers

Randolph County travelled to Lineville this week to play in the graveyard. It is hard to get a win here because Coach Giddens and the Aggies protect their turf. The Anniston Star picked Randolph County to lose 37-0, and I don’t think there were many fans in our stands or elsewhere that thought the Tigers could win...but we did.

Lineville won the coin toss and wanted to start off on defense. Randolph County dug itself a hole by getting a delay of game on the first play, which was too much for the tigers to get back. With a strong punt from Austin MacGinnis at 64 yards the Aggies were pinned on thier own ten yard line.

The Aggies had their way for two quarters, going into halftime with a 14-0 lead. From the half point of the third quarter until the end of the game it was Randolph County making all the plays. To start the fourth quarter Randolph County trailed 21-7. Rico Nelson and Ty Childs broke two big touchdown runs. The Tigers defense stood tall and caused Linville to loose more yards in overtime than they gained. Randolph County is in a three way tie for the region championship. Both teams entered the match with a record of (5-1), and with last year’s match being determined by one point, both sides were expecting an intense game.

The first two series appeared to be a struggle as both teams put up positive yardage. Wellborn seemed fit to score with a continual series of positive runs from quarterback Juddson Smith and running back Bobby White. The two combined for three straight first downs. However, on a big 1st and 10 play, Shawncey Simmons would make a massive sack for a 15-yard Wellborn loss. Wellborn would then make a massive pass play approximately 40 yards towards the end zone. The pass would be batted down, but the Clay County defense would receive a pass interference penalty. With 3:00 to play in the first quarter, another pass would be intercepted by Jamari Staples and returned about 35 yards. The Clay County offense would dominate the majority of the game from this point.

On 2nd down of the Panther’s ensuing drive, Shawncey Simmons would take the ball on a quarterback draw, half the length of the field for the touchdown. A penalty however, would bring the ball back. On the next play Simmons ran the same play and the same route, nearly scoring the touchdown again. With under 2:00 to play in the first, Deidric Rutledge would run the ball in for the touchdown. The PAT would be good, making it 7-0 for Clay County.

Just after the start of the 2nd half, Jamari Staples would make another interception, giving Clay County the ball on their 30-yard line. On the next play, Shawncey Simmons would connect with Staples for a short pass. Staples would run the ball about 25 yards and break two tackles. Shawncey Simmons would run the draw again 30 yards for the touchdown. It was clear that Coach Herron had done his research, as Simmons would exploit the same side on the same play throughout the first half. Eventually, Simmons would score again on a draw making it 20-0 with 7:00 to play in the 2nd.

With under 6:00 to play in the first half, Bobby White would bring life to the Wellborn crowd with a 35-yard run down the right side of the field. The Black Panthers would be forced to punt however, and on the ensuing play, Lamar Jones would run the ball 75 yards for a touchdown. The PAT would be no good, making it 27-0 with 3:35 to play in the half.

The 2nd half would be a battle of defenses, as both teams would make no progress for multiple series. Towards the end of the third however, Lamar Jones would dance around defenders and pick up a 25-yard run. On the following play, Shawncey Simmons would make a beast-of-a-throw to Jamari Staples, who would jump over two defenders for the 45-yard catch in the corner of the end zone.

The 4th quarter would begin with an interception by Jake Phillips to give the Panthers another good position. Both teams would bring in their younger players to finish the game. With less than four minutes to play, Chantz Goodman for Wellborn, would take a toss right and run the ball nearly 70 yards for Wellborn’s first points of the game. The Black Panthers would finish the drive and the game with a two-point conversion. Coach Herron and Co. came into the game with something to prove and they did it, finishing off Wellborn 33 – 8. Next week Clay County (6-1) plays Marbury (5-2) at home.

Clay County 57 - B.B. Comer. As the crowd anticipated the opening kick off, an Alabama, autumn sunset left a weakening streak of burnt orange light on the field. A brisk chill then drifted through Legion Stadium, triggering the sweaters and jackets to come out in preparation for a cold night of Southern Football.

The men in white and blue would kick off to the men in gold, pushing them back to their 20 yard line. On 3rd and 9, B.B. Comer would fumble the ball and the Panthers would recover very near the red zone. The Panther offense would start with Jake Phillips as QB, but would miss the chance at a touchdown on their first series. Shawncey Simmons would provide the first points of the game by kicking in three points with 9:26 to play in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive the Panther defense would hold the Tigers with a massive sack by Anthony Wood, a blocked pass by Adam Farrow, and an eventual 3rd down interception by Shawncey Simmons. Simmons would return the interception approximately 45 yards to the seven-yard line. On the next play, Lamar Jones would easily run in for a touchdown. The PAT was good, making it 10-0 with over 6:00 to play in the first.

The Tigers tried but couldn’t seem to get any positive yardage. Quarterback Joseph Treadwell was given various options by the offensive coordinator for Comer, but all plays seemed to move in slow motion to an onslaught of the Clay County defense. This would be the story for the evening. The Tigers would score, however, after a sleeping Panther offensive line allowed six Tigers to rush through and block a punt. Ensuing plays from Treadwell and running back Quaderie Norwood, would give the Tigers 6 points before the end of the first half.

The Panthers would respond by scoring a touchdown on nearly every possession from that point. A couple of players, Shawncey Simmons and Lamar Jones had multiple points on the night, while other offensive leaders Travis Smith and Deidric Rutledge also had end zone results. Perhaps the most exciting play of the second half came on a punt return from Rutledge. After a short block from Erin Smith, Rutledge returned the ball half the length of the field. When it seemed he would be pushed out of bounds, a bone-crushing block by Shahiem Ackles enabled Rutledge to dance along the sideline for the touchdown.

The Clay County Panthers would leave the nostalgic Legion Stadium with a positive score of 57-6. Unfortunately for B.B. Comer, several players went out of the game with injuries, hampering their already-depleted squad. The Tigers fell to (1-5) on the season, while the Panthers improved to (5-1). The Blue Panthers face a much-improved Black Panther squad of Wellborn in Anniston next Friday. The Wellborn Panthers are also (5-1) on their season, and will provide a challenging match for Clay County.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.fridaynightlife.com/2011/10/clay-county-57-bb-comer-6.html' title='Clay County 57 - B.B. With the bright green of the fresh grass as the only color of neutrality, the sea of blue and red, which had converged on Ashland would have the stadium rocking long before kick off.

The Panthers seemingly dominated the field in size and talent coming into the match. However, what Lineville lacked in size or quantity, they made up for with deafening cheers from their crowd, and a burning desire from their players. After a commemorative coin toss from former Governor and former Clay County football player Bob Riley, Jaylan Ackles would lead his Clay County Panthers and both crowds into an uproar for the last, first kickoff of the Clay Bowl.

The first two series would have both teams exchanging punts on 4th down, as each side battled for a breakout play. The first major play, that Coach Herron would later describe as a turning point for his team, was a Clay County punt by Jamari Staples on 4th and 1, with 6:50 to play in the 2nd quarter. Demetrius Lindsay, who had been the key to most of Lineville’s offense thus far in the game, uncharacteristically fumbled the ball on the return, and it was recovered by a pouncing Devin Gaddis of Clay County.

On the very next play, running back Travis Smith would keep his head low and bust through the seems of the Lineville defense for a touchdown. Clay County would then convert the PAT, which would make the score 7-0 for the Panthers.

Seeking redemption, the Aggies turned on the jets on the ensuing drive with a couple of good runs and a 20 yard pass play on 3rd and 9 by Demetrius Lindsay. After a big combo hit from Shawncey Simmons and Andrew Robinson, Lineville decided to go for it on 4th and 1. To the dismay of the home crowd, who were confident that the Panthers had made the stop, the referees would rule the play as a first down. Lineville would then complete passes on 3rd and 18, as well as 4th and 7 to keep their drive going. The pass on 4th and 7 however, would be ruled out of bounds and the Panthers would take over. After a few short run plays up the middle, Clay County would go into the half leading 7-0.

The Panthers would start the 2nd half with the ball and would be held by a fired up Aggie defense. After failing to convert on 3rd and 13, the Panthers would be forced to punt. The special teams for the Panthers would have their own error as kicker Jamari Staples fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Aggies. The Panther defense, led by stops from Hunter Nelson and Jaylan Ackles would then hold the Aggie offense to a 3rd and 20. It would all be for naught though, as Tyrone Cosby would take a pass and break three tackles for a 20-yard gain.

It seemed the Aggies were destined to score after bringing the ball to the five-yard line. However, the Panthers would make a show of stops, culminating in a touchdown-saving interception from Anthony Wood.

After injuring his shoulder in last week’s game against Handley, Lamar Jones would make his way on to the field for a series of runs for the Panthers. Gut runs from Shawncey Simmons and Travis Smith would create additional first down yardage as Coach Herron looked to run the clock. The Panthers would start the 4th quarter on 4th and 1, leading the game 7-0.

The nail biting would continue, as the Aggies would stop the Panthers on the first play of the 4th. On the following series however, Rob Smith would make a massive sack on 3rd and 7, forcing Lineville to punt yet again. The Panthers would also punt on a 4th and 1 of the next drive. Yet another punt scare came as the Aggie punt receiver dropped the ball. Demetrius Lindsay would quickly hop on the ball though, saving the series for Lineville.

With their backs against the wall, the Aggies would make a huge pass play to Curtis Hunter for a 25-yard gain. The chunk of yards would rile up the anxious visiting crowd and seemingly wipe the fatigue from their players’ faces. The next play would be a completed pass to Demetrius Lindsay for 15 yards. Lindsay would lateral the ball to another receiver for an additional 6 yards on the play. The drive would continue with a 10-yard run from Curtis Hunter, and would culminate with a touchdown run from Demetrius Linday. The PAT would be no good, making the score 7-6 with a few minutes to play in the 4th.

Perhaps the scariest moment for Panther fans came on the ensuing kickoff return, when receiver Shawncey Simmons fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Aggie Daniel Henry. Coach Giddens’ crew would recover the ball less than 30 yards from the end zone, but would miss another field goal attempt for the win. With under 2:00 to play, and after another punt from the Panthers, the Aggies would have one final shot to win the game. An interception from Jamari Staples however, would seal the deal, and the Panthers would leave the last Clay Bowl as the victors.

It was a tale of two teams. The Panthers dominated on the ground, while the Aggies were calculating through the air; while both teams’ defenses showed signs of stopping any team of any size.

As the two teams knelt for a final prayer of support and thanksgiving, one tradition died, while another was born. Next year, the red vs. blue will become the red, white, and blue; and the people of Clay County will finally stand as one.

Handley 48 Sweet Water 27

By Wesley Kinsey

It took a while for the Tigers to get on track but get on track they did as Handley ran it's home win streak to 29 games with a win over 1A powerhouse Sweet Water 48-27. Coach Mike Battles recorded win number 63 as Tiger head coach.

It looked as if the Tigers would fall behind early after a blocked punt by the Bulldogs with 10:51 to go in the first. But with Sweet Water at the Handley 22, the Tigers stopped a fake punt and took the ball over on downs at the 25 with 7:25 to go in the opening stanza. The teams duked it out like two prizefighters as the first quarter ended 0-0. Handley would cap a 4 play 85 yard drive early in the second with an 11 yard scamper for the TD by Breyon Deberry.

The touchdown was set up by a 44 yard run by Deberry and a 20 yard jaunt by Quay Hunter. The PAT was good and the Tigers led 7-0 with 11:52 to go in the half. But with only 7:43 remaining Sweet Water would block another Handley punt and set themselves up at the Handley 4. Sweet Water would score on a Demarcus Gamble run and nail the extra point to tie it 7-7 midway in the second. On Handley's next possession Breyon Deberry threw a 55 yard halfback pass to Tevin Cook to set the Tigers up at the Bulldog 20. Three plays later Deberry again took it in 10 yards for the score. The PAT made it 14-7 and the score stood that way at the half.

The third quarter resembled a track meet. With Handley's defense stopping Sweet Water, the ball went over on downs at the Bulldog 45. Three plays later Quay Hunter scored his first TD of the night on a 26 yard run. The PAT failed and Handley led 20-7 with 8:31 to go in the third. Hunter added another 5 yard TD run at 6:48 and Handley converted the 2 pt conversion to go up 28-7. The Bulldogs roared back and went 85 yards in 4 plays with a 3 yard Gamble TD. With the PAT good the score was 28-14 with 4:01 left in the third. On Handley's next offensive play Duran Zachery bolted 62 yards to the Bulldog one. On the next play Zachary blasted into the end zone. The PAT was good and Handley led 35-14 with 3:31 to go in the third. The Bulldogs would score on 30 yard run by Jarvis Lewis. With the extra point it was 35-21 and there was still 2:04 to go in the quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff, Herbert Staples capped a 3 play 64 yard drive by Handley with a 59 yard scamper for the TD. The PAT failed and Handley Let 41-21 with 36 seconds remaining. In the 4th quarter Breyon Deberry would add 47 yard run to score his 3rd TD of the night. The PAT was good and the Tigers led a 48-21 with 8:12 remaining.

Down by 27 the defending 1A champs never quit and Gamble added a 24 yard TD with 1:31 to go. The PAT failed and that's how the game would end with Handley the victor 48-27. Handley goes to 5-0 and moves back into region 3 play next week at Marbury.

Final Clay Bowl : Clay County v. Radio and TV were there. The hills were covered with fans from both sides. Even the Executive Director of the AHSAA, Steve Savarese, was on hand as two titans in 3A squared off in a Region 3 showdown. The fourth ranked Panthers from Clay County took on the third ranked Tigers of Handley.....Prime time!

The game lived up to the hype. After returning the opening kickoff, the Tigers looked poised to go up quick but the Panthers intercepted a pass at their own 5. After Handley forced a Clay County punt, the Tigers set up at the Panther 29.

Six plays later Chris Dillard powered in from the 2 for Handley's first TD of the night. Connor Boyd added the point after kick as HHS went up 7-0 with 6:39 to go in the first quarter. The score remained that way until CCHS capped off a drive with a Shawncey Simmons pass to Jamari Staples for the score at 10:04 left in the first half.

Breyon Deberry dashed to the end zone on an 11 yard run with 7:30 remaining and Boyd's PAT made it 14-6 with 7:33 remaining. Handley again drove deep into Panther territory but a 41 yard field goal attempt was no good and the half ended 14-6.

Handley again moved deep into Clay County territory midway in the third but turned the ball over at the 15. Then in the final stanza, fullback Dejuan Clark bolted 80 yards for a Handley touchdown with 8:40 to go in the game. The PAT failed but Handley took a 20-6 advantage.

The Panthers never quit and scored again on a Simmons to Staples pass with 2:47 to go in the game. Simmons added the extra point to draw the Panthers within seven at 20-13. The ensuing onside kick failed to go the required 10 yards and the Tigers went into the victory formation to end the game.

Handley extends it's home win streak to 28 and goes to 4-0 on the season, 3-0 in region three. Coach Mike Battles secured win # 62 with the victory. Clay County goes to 3-1, and 2-1 respectively. But don't be surprised to see these titans clash again in the playoffs. And if they do, once again it will be prime time.....

Randolph County 52, Horseshoe Bend 6

By Wesley Wortham

Voice of the RCHS Tigers

It was a cool night at and it made it finally feel like football season. The Tigers came out in their new blue jerseys and gold pants. The booster club started off the night giving the cheerleaders flowers to say thanks for the hard work keeping the crowd pumped. The Tigers were taking on the Horseshoe Bend Generals.

The Generals won the coin toss and wanted to take the football first and that was the only win they would have for the rest of the night. Austin MacGinnis kicked off and it went through the end zone for a touch back. The Generals started at their own 20 yard line and on the first play they tried a pass that big Nate Boyd picked off from his defensive end position and took it to the house, however it was called back on penalties. The Tigers took the ball on the Generals 18 yard line. After 2 plays Ty Sparks found Willis Knight for the first score of the game.

The Tigers ended the game with 345 total yards of offense compared to the Generals 191.The Tigers had 14 first downs to the Generals six. The Tigers forced five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Sparks completed 12- of -18 and 228 yards and 2 touchdowns. MacGinnis was 7 for 7 on extra points and a 35-yard field goal.

Boyd had an interception for a touchdown, and Knight had two touchdowns. Colton Lovvorn and Rico Nelson scored a touchdown each. It was very nice seeing the coaching staff clean the bench with every player on the team getting a chance to get in the game. Next week the Tigers will take on the Reeltown Rebels, last year’s state runner up.

I spoke with Coach Sparks Sunday after he previewed film on the team, and he said they are still about as good as they were last year. So, we need all the Tiger fans to make the long trip to help cheer on the tigers.

Clay County 14 - Leeds 7

By Steve Haslam

Repayment. Retribution. Recompense. Retaliation. Revenge.

Such was the bitter taste that filled the mouths of die-hard Clay County fans coming into their match with Leeds on Friday night. Fans that had traveled to Leeds on two occasions last year remembered a particular game in which their team lost by a field goal after going four quarters in the rain with no score. A similar feeling, which irked players, coaches, and fans alike, came from the #1 ranking that had been given to Leeds prior to their arrival in Ashland.

A different team stepped onto the field for Clay County this year. A team that Coach Herron preached would need to have faith if they wanted to defeat the favorites in Friday’s match. There was no rain, no freezing cold temperatures, and no scorching heat. Just a fresh grass field, a blue hanging sky, a team with a lot to prove, and their last chance to do it.

The Panthers would begin the game on the receiving end, with a good return to the 35-yard line. After a few good runs and some offside calls against Leeds, the Panthers would punt the ball away. After a punt back from Leeds, Andrew Robinson would take a short pass for a ten-yard gain. On the next play, running back Lamar Jones would take a toss right and run the ball forty-plus yards for the touchdown. With 4:11 to play in the first quarter, Clay County led the game with a score of 7 – 0. The touchdown invigorated the home side and made an already fervent crowd, hungry for more.

Leeds had their first real chance to score squandered with 2:00 to play in the 4th. The Green Wave attempted to run the ball on 3rd and five, but were dropped behind the line by Travis Smith. The first quarter would end 7-0.

Leeds would begin the 2nd quarter with a huge pass play to #4, Rie Falleta for more than 30 yards. After the pass, Leeds would use a couple short runs from Christopher Edwards to push into the end zone and eventually tie up the game. With 9:53 in the 2nd quarter, the score was tied 7-7.

With 5:00 left in the 2nd quarter on 4th and 2, Leeds decided to run the ball and pushed the chains for a first down. On 3rd and 11 of the next set, Leeds coaching staff opted for a long pass, which was intercepted by a leaping Devin Gaddis.
With 1:03 in the second quarter, and on 4th and 2, Shawncey Simmons ran the ball on a quarterback draw and picked up 35 yards after breaking three tackles. Eventually, Clay County would run out of downs and Leeds would take over to end the 1st half.

Both schools’ bands played beautiful renditions of popular tunes with Leeds focusing on hits from television, and Clay County’s funky renditions of Southern Hits.

Leeds would receive the ball to begin the 2nd half. The Green Wave’s drive would show promise after a 15 yard run from #5, Christopher Edwards. An ensuing play from #22, would include a 15 yard pass completion, taking Leeds to their 35 yard line. Clay County’s defense would then hold the Green Wave to no yards for the next two plays. After a brief time-out for the Leeds’ coaching staff, the men in green used their field goal team to try and raise the score. The field goal was no good, resulting in a crucial and crowd-pleasing turnover.

On the 1st down of the Panthers’ next series, a pass from Shawncey Simmons to Andrew Robinson would result in a 35-yard gain. Coach Herron and Co. would then use a series of runs from both Lamar Jones and Travis Smith to both pick up first down yardage, and also run the clock. On 2nd and 7, with 5:37 to play in the 3rd, Shawncey Simmons would run the ball 30 yards on a quarterback draw for the touchdown. The PAT would be good, making the score 14 – 7 for Clay County. With a few seconds left after two ensuing drives, Clay County would punt the ball away to begin the 4th quarter.

Prior to the commencement of the 4th quarter, the stadium was brought to heartfelt silence as the announcer and all present in Horn-White stadium paid tribute to the victims of the September 11th attacks. As Taylor Chappell played a beautiful rendition of “Taps,” for a moment, the green and blue were united in the cause of liberty and pride for the service men and women of our country.

The 4th quarter began with a huge defensive play, as Andrew Robinson would make a massive sack behind the line and the Green Wave were forced to begin 2nd down with 20 yards to go for a first down. Leeds would react with confidence though, creating a 20 yard pass play that was complete. On perhaps the biggest defensive play of the game, with inches to go on 4th down, the Panthers made the stop, dropping Leeds behind the line. The onslaught, led by Jaylan Ackles, would provide the players and coaching staff with the fire they needed to finish the game.

On 3rd and 3 on the following series, Travis Smith would stumble to the line but keep his feet and hop through three defenders for a huge gain. The Panthers would bring the ball back down the field but were met with a dangerous 4th and 11 with 5:00 to play in the game. To the excitement of both crowds, Coach Herron decided to go for it. Shawncey Simmons completed a pass to Andrew Robinson for the touchdown, but with a lineman downfield, the Panthers were forced to take it back. The Panthers would then punt the ball to the 13 yard line.

On the next play for Leeds, #22 would make a 25-yard run, building the intensity in the air. Next, the Green Wave would keep the crowd on their heels by completing a 30-yard pass to Dylan Shelton with 4:13 in the 4th. After nearly being sacked on the ensuing play, Leeds’ quarterback completed yet another pass to Shelton for an additional 20 yards. On 1st and 10, Leeds fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Panther defender Andrew Robinson.

The Panthers then opted to run the ball in order to run the clock, but they in turn, fumbled the ball themselves and it is recovered by Leeds. On 3rd and 8, a long Leeds pass, which was headed for the end zone, was intercepted by Anthony Woods and run back half the length of the field. This would cut off any hope for Leeds at making a recovery.

Response. Restitution. Resurrection. Redemption. Reinstatement.

Clay County silenced the critics with a convincing 14-7 win over Leeds bumping their record to 3-0 on the season, and making the statement that their last season will be a force to be reckoned with. With Handley as the only remaining opponent that should challenge the Panthers this year, the Clay County Panthers are convinced they have returned to their tradition of winning and state football domination.

As they carry a small town on their shoulders, jumping at every chance to prove that traditions never die, the Clay County Panthers plan to paint the state blue; and build off the message of faith in themselves and in each other.

The Panthers leave Ashland next week to play Handley for their first away game of the season.

Weekly Scoreboard (For Clay & After the Bobcats received the kickoff and were forced to punt from their own 31, Handley blocked the punt and set up shop near the Beulah goal line.

On the first offensive play of the game for the Tigers, Breyon Deberry took it in and Connor Boyd added the kick to make it 7-0 with 7:50 fo go in the first quarter. Following an interception by Anthony Foster that set the Tigers up at the Bobcat 38, Trae Kyles passed to a wide open Tevin Cook for another TD. The PAT failed and Handley led 13-0 with 6:21 left in the initial stanza.

The Tigers would lead 25 to zip following a snap over the Bobcat punters head picked up and run in by Duran Zachery and a 9 yard TD run by Herbert Staples set up by a dazzling punt return by Dexter Reese.

In the second quarter, Breyon Deberry added his second TD on a 40 yard pass reception from Kyles 9:35 to go. Herbert Staples exhibited his blazing speed on a 57 yard run from scrimmage and Handley led 37-0.

Beulah managed a touchdown as time expired in the first half to make the halftime score Handley 37 Beulah 7.In the second half, Kyles found Dexter Reese for yet another TD and the third quarter ended 44-7.

Handley would add another score on a 19 yard scamper by backup quarterback Cody Foster. Beulah added a late score in the 4th to make the final 51-13.

Handley moves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Region play and sets up a battle of the unbeatens at Wright Field next week as Clay County defeated Leeds 14-7.
Coach Mike Battles secured his 61st win as Handley head coach with the victory.

Randolph County 30 - LaFayette 29

By Wesley Wortham

Voice of the RCHS Tigers

Tigers defense draw the Bulldogs offsides.

At Frog level Friday it was the first home game for Randolph County High School. Fans filled the stands to see their beloved Tigers take on the LaFayette Bulldogs in a big region show down.

Coach Sparks had been preaching all week the importance to get the 1st Region win. LaFayette started the scoring off with an early touchdown but the Tigers came storming back and took the lead 7-6. Coach P's defense started to figure out what LaFayette was up to and the Tiger defense stopped the Bulldogs the rest of the first half.

Randolph County rolled up 24 unanswered points and lead at half time 24-6 . The Tigers suffered a very bad loss to it's defense right before halftime on a kickoff. Middle linebacker and the senior defense signal caller Tyde Moore went down with what appears to be a bad knee injury and it showed that he was hard to replace in the middle when LaFayette started mounting their comeback in the 2nd half.

With 2:12 left in the game the Bulldogs took the lead over Randolph County 29 to 24 . The Tigers took the ball at there own 30 and started their march down the field lead by QB Ty Sparks (coach Sparks' son). He was throwing short passes to receivers, and with a lot help from the Bulldog's defense, the Tigers found theirselves within striking distance. A win is what Sparks found Willis Knight on an out route and Knight did the rest. Then it was strong legged Austin MacGinnis' time to add the PAT.

Layfette had 30 seconds to try and answer but the Tigers turned up their defense and down went the Bulldog's QB twice as time ran out.

It's an RCHS tradition to go out on field and listen to what Coach Sparks has to say to his team and as always he praises the other team first. He then said it was not a pretty win but it was a WIN! It showed him that the team won't quit no matter what kind of hole they are in.

Randolph County has now moved to 1-1. The Tigers will again be in region play this Friday night at home against the Horseshoe Bend Generals. They will be looking to make it 2 and 0 in the region and another step toward making the 1st goal of the season to make the playoffs. Game starts at 7 and gates open at 5 so all the Mighty Tigers Fans lets fill the stands again Friday Night!

Handley 43 B.B. The halftime scored was Handley 36-0. After a dazzling kick off return to the Comer 25 by Herbert Staples, Breyon Deberry scored on a 6 yard run with 8:36 to go in the third. Boyd's PAT again was perfect and Handley ended their scoring at 43-0.

The Comer Tigers added two late touchdowns in the fourth to notch the final at 43-14. Prior to the first whistle, various females making up the senior high Homecoming Court were ushered on to the field in bright colored dresses, and with bright shiny smiles. Wearing a long black dress, senior and dance line member Erika Smith was crowned Homecoming Queen for 2011.

Coach Herron Inc. showed that they had worked out any kinks in their system that may have shown up in their last game against Randolph County. The panthers marched down the field in their first series and throughout the first half, using massive runs by Lamar Jones and passing from Shawncey Simmons.

While the Panthers would complete a few passes on the night, the running game took over with close to 300 yards gained. An incredible defense, which led the Panthers in their last game, continued their reign, nabbing three interceptions and forcing three fumbles. One interception, perhaps the crowd’s choice for Play of the Game, came towards the end of the first half, when 270 pound Nose Guard Jaylan Ackles intercepted a lateral and ran it back for a touchdown.

The Panthers didn’t leave much room for breathing, logging in 40 plus points prior to the end of the first half. Members of Coach Herron’s starting squad were kept off the field for the remainder of the game. The Panthers dismantled the Bobcats 58 – 0, holding Beulah to only two first downs on the evening.

While the Clay Bowl is probably the most anticipated game this season, if Coach Herron’s team is to make their goal of reaching the State tournament, next week’s game against Leeds, and the following week’s game against Handley will make or break the Panthers’ season.

With the win over Beulah, the Panthers improve to 2-0 on the season and face Leeds next week at home.

Weekly Scoreboard (For Clay & Randolph County High School Football)

Clay County 58, Beulah 0
Handley 43, B.B. Coach Mike Battles notched his 59th win as Handley head coach. The night was destined to be memorable following delivery of the game ball via helicopter to injured senior Kiemon Sanders before kickoff.

Breyon Deberry bolted 68 yards on the first offensive play to score the first of Handley's touchdowns. Duran Zachary added a two yard power TD run with 7:44 to go in the first quarter and quarterback Trae Kyles posted an 83 yard keeper at 1:16 to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead at the end of the first. Deberry added another 38 yard score as did Zachary with a 24 yard jaunt.

Colby Floyd also found the endzone for the Tigers on on 2 yard run in the 4th. Coach Herron and company entered the stadium with a lot to prove at the commencement of their last season as Clay County Panthers. A bold statement was made on the first play following kick off, when Jamari Staples took a short pass and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers then missed the PAT, a trend that haunted the team last year. Quarterback Ty Sparks, for the Tigers, tried to respond with a series of short plays, but his offense fell short and the Tigers had to punt with 8:05 to play in the first.

After a short punt return on their subsequent possession, Ty Sparks connected with #27 for a 50 yard touchdown pass. Making the extra point, Coach Randy Sparks’ team went up by one with 4:23 in the first.

The Panthers were given a wake-up call and they took it, producing an 80-yard run by Lamar Jones on the first play of the next series. After taking the ball in for the touchdown, the referees riled up the home crowd by giving Jones an excessive celebration penalty. The Panthers responded to the call by going for the 2-point conversion. Shawncey Simmons completed a short pass to Jamari Staples for the conversion and the Panthers led 14-7 with 3:33 in the 1st.

The Tiger offense continued to struggle as the Panther defense made several plays behind the line. One stop included a massive sack by DeAndre Wills. On 3rd down of one series, Shawncey Simmons intercepted a pass by Sparks and made a short run back for a touchdown. The Panthers led 21-7, with 2:00 before the half.

The Randolph County Marching band played a rendition of “We Will Rock You,” in a half-time attempt to boost the spirits of the visiting crowd. Mr. Russel Hathcock, Director of The Clay County High School’s Marching Band, answered by marching his group on to the field and by playing a plethora of Southern rock renditions. The CCHS presentation appropriately ended with a symphonic version of “Freebird,” including a guitar solo by student Jesse Patterson.

After fans had a chance to grab some dogs, funnel cakes, or cold drinks to battle the heat, the Tigers received the ball and began pushing up the field. Number 37, Nelson, for Randolph County moved the stakes with multiple run plays that put the Panthers on their heels. But with 6:53 in the 3rd, Jamari Staples made another Panther interception and ran it back for a touchdown.

The panthers would score again off a short touchdown pass to Andrew Robinson in the 4th to make it 40-7 with 9 minutes to play in the 4th. Randolph County would make another touchdown with 4:00 to play but by then, the game was all over. Clay County began their last season with a crushing win and will hope to continue their streak next week against Beulah.

Get Your Team Posters

We have 11 x 17 Team Posters available now for sale. After the ensuing kickoff, it took Handley only 30 seconds to take the ball 65 yards for the score. Duran Zachary put the Tigers on the board first with a run of over thirty yards into the end zone set up by a long Bryon Deberry run. Matt Wise added the extra point and Handley led 7-0 with 11:30 to go in the first quarter. Bowdon's starters showed some speed and big play ability on the next drive but a pass intended for their big receiver was picked off by Dexter Reese at the Handley 22. Handley capped a 78 yard drive with a 2 yard pass from Trae Kyles to Demitris Foster for the score. Connor Boyd added the extra point and Handley led 14-0 with seven minutes left in the first quarter. Bowdon produced some sparks but no points on their next possession ultimately turning the ball over on downs at the Handley 23. Handley began subbing units and Trae Kyles capped a 77 yard drive on a keeper around left end with 10:11 to go in the half. The PAT failed.

With the halftime score 20-0, Handley forced a fumble and recovered at the Devil 34. Chris Dillard scored on a one yard run to take the score to 26-0 with 10:33 remaining in the 3rd. Both coaches substituted liberally and the Red Devils struck on a beautifully executed 60 yard play. With the failed PAT the score stood at 26-6 with 1:54 to go in the third. Bowdon went on to score with 8:20 to go in the game to end the scoring.

Bowdon begins the regular season next week as they host Woodland. Handley begins its regular season likewise at Wright Field as the Tigers host Heard County.
<img width='1' height='1'
